Beginnings:
The fourth Buk bilong Pikinini library was opened in November 2009 for the community of Six Mile. Once again, we chose a location that is close to public access areas like the Police Station, Health Clinic and opposite the Six Mile markets.

Scope of learning:
Keeping in line with our mission, our Six Mile library was officially opened by highly respected member of the community, Sir Paulius Matane, Governor General of Papua Guinea from 2004 to 2010. Sir Matane himself only learned to read and write at the age of 17 and has since authored over 40 books – what better inspiration for the young minds that we teach on a daily basis! Sir Matane remains a strong advocate for increasing literacy rates in Papua New Guinea and we feel honoured to have someone like him supporting our learning programmes.

Our sponsors:
The Six Mile library is sponsored, once again, by Airways Hotel and Apartments, which is one of the important Founder Sponsors of Buk bilong Pikinini. Our gratitude extends further towards this generous organisation that assisted with the establishment and funding of our libraries at the Port Moresby General Hospital, the Special Education and Resource Centre at Hohola and now Six Mile.

Our precious children and teacher-librarians:
Our library at Six Mile is one of Buk bilong Pikinini's busiest Port Moresby libraries with children lining up every morning to attend our literacy-based learning programme. Agnes, our Head Librarian, is so popular with the children that they all want to grow up to become teachers!
