Buk bilong Pikinini milestone library number 10 opens in Alotau.
Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) library - Alotau, proudly sponsored by Nawae Construction, has a well established children’s library located at Rabe village about 10 minutes drive east of Alotau town. This is the first BbP library to reach the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea with a second library currently underway.
Buk bilong Pikinini – Alotau officially opened its doors on the 7th of December 2012 and is now in its second year of operation. Each day in the library Head Librarian, Ellen Warren (pictured above right), with the support of Assistant Librarian Lisa Saking (above left) and Australian volunteer, Camilla Bullen (centre) implement the BbP program.
Camilla says “children flood in from surrounding communities, settlements and villages to learn how to read and write in English, observe special events, interact with other children in a safe and friendly environment and sometimes just have the opportunity to play with toys and puzzles”. Buk bilong runs an early childhood literacy program which provides vulnerable children with the essential skills in life and helps them get ready for school.
Buk bilong Pikinini is extremely grateful for the support of our sponsor Nawae Construction Ltd. Nawae aims to embrace responsibility for the company’s actions and encourage a positive impact through its activities on the environment, communities, consumers, and employees. The Christina Alexandrou Violaris (CAV) Learning Centre, incorporating Buk bilong Pikinini library, forms part of Nawae’s vision to target improvements in health, education, gender equality and disability, with supported activities and programmes that promote sustainable development and improve the livelihoods of people living in Milne Bay Province.
