Tari partnership Library

Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) celebrated the opening of a library at the Kuluanda Primary School in Tari, Hela Province, on Tuesday the 25th of October 2016.

This library is the result of a partnership between the Oil Search Foundation , the Hela Pronvincial Administration, the Catholic Diocese and BbP. This library opening will be the eighteenth for BbP and is part of the organisations new Buk bilong Komuniti Program, which seeks to re-establish school libraries and to train community educators and teachers to run independent community based libraries.

The establishment of the Kuluanda Primary school library has been made possible a long term partnership with the Oil Search Foundation, which has a strong commitment to address illiteracy in Gulf, Southern Highlands and Hela - where literacy levels are among the lowest in the country. For this particular library, the land has been generously donated by the Kuluanda Primary School and the Tari District Administration. Buk bilong Pikinini is grateful to Oil Search MD, and Chair of the Oil Search Foundation Peter Botten for his tremendous holistic support for the largely illiterate communities surrounding the operations of the company.

Peter Botten, Managing Director Oil Search and Chair of Oil Search Foundation, said:

“Today, we are delighted to open our literacy library, in partnership with the Catholic Diocese of Mendi, the Hela Education department and Buk bilong Pikinini. This marks the launch of our first major project under our new leadership and education program.

When we considered where to focus this program, we started by asking communities to tell us their priorities. Consistently, improving literacy was at the top of the list.”

The library opening was celebrated by the whole community and included a delegation from the Australian Parliament including Hon. Senator Penny Wong, BbP's Ambassador Lynda Babao O'Neill, the Provincial Administration, the Catholic Diocese, Save the Children staff, representatives from the Department of Education and the Oil Search Foundation team.
