Publishing books for the children of Papua New Guinea.
Buk bilong Pikinini has published 18 titles to date. The picture books and readers have been created to ensure PNG children can recognise themselves and their culture in the books we publish.
NEW READERS - ‘WHEN I GROW UP’ SERIES
With this series, Buk bilong Pikinini seeks to inform children about what is required for becoming different professions. Not all children have the opportunity to come to work with their parents or understand what it takes to become an engineer, a banker or a pharmacist. It is vital for them to understand why they need an education.
The readers feature children who have attended our Early Childhood Education program and role models from the different companies where the professions are selected from. We are aiming to create a ‘mini library’ of professions which include a Store Manager, Farmer, Pilot, Teacher, ICT Officer, Paramedic, Banker, Pastry Chef, Pharmacist, Heavy Equipment Operator, Engineer, Nurse and Architect. We will producing more this year to ensure we the children see all the exciting opportunities they have and have something to aspire to.
The readers target children in the 4-8 age group - the language is simple with large text type. The readers showcase the children on the “job” in PPE. The readers feature beautiful pictures from Papua New Guinea with ample visual clues inserted for more difficult words.

When I grow up I want to be a Store Manager
We follow Minnetau as she learns what it takes to become a Store Manager at the beautiful Brian Bell Homecentre. You need to be very organised, nice to your customers and look smart in your uniform.
Making sure that the shelves are always stacked neatly requires team work …
When I grow up I want to be a Farmer
We follow Imani as he learns about cows at Ilimo Dairy Farm and using modern farming practises at Innovative Agro Industry to grow beautiful vegetables. He loved learning about dairy products and eating the fresh ice cream produced with the milk from the cows.
When I grow up I want to be a Pilot
We follow Naime as she learns about being a pilot and the types of aircraft you can fly. Naime loved getting in the cockpit of a PNG Air ATR 72-600 aircraft and pressing (a few) buttons.
If you are a pilot you can fly around the world.
When I grow up I want to be a Teacher
We follow Siai as he learns about what it takes to be a teacher. He wants to teach the children to read, write and do maths and science as well. We see all the materials he will need for his classroom.
This is most likely the most important job in the world.
When I grow up I want to be an ICT* Officer
Melanie had never touched a computer before she got the opportunity to learn from Godfrey and David at Niunet what it takes to work in IT. She loved seeing how computers look inside and connecting to the internet.

When I grow up I want to be a Paramedic
We follow Flimsep as he learns about the vital life-saving work being carried out by St. John paramedics in the community. We see inside an ambulance with all the medical equipment. Paramedics also need to be able to drive very fast to get the patients to hospital as quickly as possible.
When I grow up I want to be a Banker
We follow Piro as he learns about what banks like BSP do with money and how they can assist their customers. He also learns about the PNG currency, how to save for big things in life and how to count money with a machine.
This financial literacy reader has been created to support the Buk bilong Pikinini numeracy program.
When I grow up I want be a Pastry Chef
Being a Pastry Chef must be a dream job - especially at the beautiful Airways Hotel. John learns about ingredients, kitchen tools and machines required to make stunning pastries and bread. John shares his chocolate cake recipe and serves up his cake to all his class mates. Yum.
When I grow up I want to be a Pharmacist
Being a Pharmacist is all about assisting people when they are feeling unwell. Pauline learns about doctor’s prescriptions, medication and how to advise the customers to take their medication safely.
Pharmacies such as CPL can also help with vaccinations and support young mothers at their health clinic.
When I grow up I want to be
a Heavy Equipment Operator
Operating some of the biggest mining machines in the world is no small feat. Tryphina learns from the team at Hastings Deering that safety always comes first. We see the different types of heavy vehicles and what they are used for at construction and mining sites around the country.
When I grow up I want to be an Engineer
We follow Dorcas as she learns about what it takes to be an engineer at a huge ExxonMobil oil and gas site. She learns about where oil comes from, how to extract it and what it is used for.
So many systems and exciting machines have to work together to make it all happen.
When I grow up I want to be a Nurse
Lowen is keen to try all the instruments like the stethoscope to care for his patients. He learns that nurses can work both at a hospital and a clinic and does a very important job in the community. At the CPL health clinic Lowen enjoyed measuring, weighing and checking that his patients are healthy.
So much to learn …
When I grow up I want to be an Architect
Christabelle wants to learn everything about houses and buildings. To become an architect you have to be good at drawing and measuring both by hand and on the computer to draw up plans. Visiting Pacific Palms Property work sites requires you to wear a hard hat and other PPE.
It is so exciting to be designing buildings the people can work and live in.

Our Village: Tatana Island

The pictorial reader was created in partnership with the children of Tatana Island.
The children guided us through their village with digital cameras sharing their landmarks, houses, pets and community members.

The illustrated reader is illustrated and told by children enrolled at Buk bilong Pikinini’s Library Learning Centre at Koki markets.
The children learnt how to water colour thanks to the wonderful guidance provided by Australia’s well-known children’s book author Alison Lester.

In 2014, Buk bilong Pikinini sponsored the children’s writing category of the PNG Crocodile Awards. Iriani Wanma’s entry won the competition and
we decided to publish the story. We asked the late talented artist Marlon Kuelinad
to illustrate the story which is based on a friendship between two different species.
The transformational story greatly captivates the children’s imagination and has gentle messaging of how creatures from different backgrounds can still be friends.

I am Noah – This is my story

This story is based on the experience of Noah Agino, who has grown up without the ability to hear. Noah managed to go to school and thanks to the support of his family and friends, have a positive experience despite his disability. Noah has been Buk bilong Pikinini’s Special Needs Head Teacher-Librarian at our Library Learning Centre at the Red Cross Special Education and Resource Centre since 2008 and is one of the very best sign-language “speakers” in PNG.
Noah worked with Anne-Sophie to bring his story to life and the talented artist Peter Ella illustrated the story. Assembled by Andrew Kelly and Anne-Sophie Hermann with all publishing, editing and design support provided by Wild Dog publishing.

Soloman, Sebastian, Simon, Gladwin, Serah, Mannaseh, Janet, Jancy, Sima and Trevor’s stories describe what they like to do and how they have fun with their families and friends. The focus is on the children’s abilities and seeks to support disabled children to be seen as equals and entitled to an education – just like any other child. The book contains comprehensive teachers’ notes and a terminology intended as a simple resource for teachers and students alike.
