Habare Literacy Library
Remote PNG
This library is together with Kikori and Fugwa - a partnership and consultancy arrangement with the Oil Search Foundation to support children in Hela province communities where Oil Search operates.
The children come from very isolated and remote villages and often have to walk for an hour or two with a parent to come and attend classes.
The children are unable to speak English so the Buk bilong Pikinini program plays an important part in the children’s transition to primary school where the language used is English.
This area is so isolated that most people have never left the region and sometimes even the village. However, the desire for an education is strong and the mothers are willing to take the long walk every day to ensure the children become literate - an opportunity that many of these mothers did not get themselves.
