Buk bilong Pikinini Celebrates Opening of Newly Renovated Library Learning Centre at Port Moresby General Hospital’s Children’s Malnutrition, TB & HIV Ward, 3C

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – March 7, 2025 – Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) is proud to announce the reopening of its newly renovated Library Learning Centre (LLC) at the Port Moresby General Hospital’s Children’s Malnutrition Ward 3C. The library learning corner at the Port Moresby General Hospital was originally opened on April 08th 2007. The reopening, that has taken place today Friday, March 7, 2025, marks an exciting milestone for the organization as it unveils a newly renovated and expanded learning space for children receiving treatment at the hospital.

This expansion and renovation work was generously supported by Lamana Development Limited, a subsidiary of The Constantinou Group of Companies, and will provide a brighter, more welcoming environment for more children who spend long periods at the hospital. Mr Leon Schulze, The LLC has received support from the Sir Theo Foundation, which has been a key partner of BbP since 2014, and this space has allowed many young patients, whether admitted themselves or accompanying family members, to engage in educational and recreational activities.

Children admitted to the hospital may stay for days, weeks, or even months, and the renovated Library Learning Centre offers a sanctuary where they can take a break from their medical routines. The centre features a variety of books, educational toys and resources, and play-based activities designed to encourage learning and creativity, providing children with a much-needed opportunity to escape their hospital surroundings.

BbP is incredibly grateful to George Constantinou Jnr and The Constantinou Group for their generous and ongoing support through the Sir Theo Foundation. Their vision and commitment to enhancing the lives of children in need is truly inspiring. This newly renovated space is not just a place for children to read and play—it’s a safe and nurturing environment where they can momentarily forget about their hospital experience and dive into the world of learning and imagination.

BbP would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to Cathy Johnson and the Port Moresby General Hospital Board, Dr. Molumi and Dr. Sobi for their support and for granting permission to expand and renovate the LLC. Additionally, BbP expresses deep appreciation to Mr. Leon Schulze and Mr. Eric Maloney and team from Lamana Development Limited for their expert work on the renovation, which will allow more children to benefit from the program.

The LLC at the hospital was the first BbP LLC to be established in 2007 and since then has been an essential part of our mission to ensure that children facing long-term illnesses have access to the educational resources and activities they deserve. With the increased space and enhanced facilities, we are excited to welcome more children to our program and provide them with the joy of learning during their hospital stay.

The reopening took place on Friday, March 7th, 2025, with special guests, including Leon Schule from Lamana Development Limited and nurse Rapea from the 3C ward, BbP staff, teachers and children, joining in the celebration of this new chapter for the Library Learning Centre.

Buk bilong Pikinini remains committed to promoting early literacy and learning among children in Papua New Guinea and is proud to continue its partnership with The Sir Theo Foundation, The Constantinou Group and the Port Moresby General Hospital to make a difference in the lives of children in need.
