Literacy Week 2023 – an action-packed week of Early Childhood Education

PNG animals and wildlife & Early Financial Literacy

A great number of activities and events will be taking place with children enrolled at Buk bilong Pikinini’s (BbP) Library Learning Centres to celebrate Literacy Week from the 4-8th of September.

The week will start with the study of wildlife found in Papua New Guinea. The children will learn to recognise the animals, study habitats and understand their cultural significance (through Tumbuna stories and by looking at bilas, flag, notes, coins etc). The organisation has invited parents and partners to share cultural stories about PNG's most iconic animals.

BbP will also launch ‘When I Grow Up I want to be a Zoo Keeper” – reader, developed with financial support from the Sir Brian Bell Foundation and a colouring-in book ‘Animals of Papua New Guinea - Identify animals & colour in (Student handbook for Cultural Learning)’ developed with financial support by TotalEnergies -   at an exciting event at Port Moresby Nature Park. The children will also be using plush toys, developed by local designer Meriba Igara, such as a Bird of Paradise, a Tree kangaroo, a Cuscus, a Turtle and a Cassowary for their learning activities.

The final days of Literacy Week will be a 'Market Day' at BbP’s LLCs, where the children will use their financial literacy and numeracy skills to set up shop and "pretend sell" food and play items to each other, parents and invited guests. This activity has been supported with fresh food, packaged foods and drinks generously donated by: Ilimo Dairy Farm, Trukai, Supreme Industries, CPL, Oceania Beverage, SVS Supermarket, BNG Trading, Airways Hotel, Pacific Industries and Sanitarium.
