World Environment Day
Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) has marked World Environment Day with events at all its Library Learning Centres across PNG with the theme: "Solutions to Plastic Pollution.”
Given the issues of climate change and the current problems faced across the Pacific with plastic pollution, it is vital that children learn to care for the environment from a young age. Plastic pollution is a critical issue all across the world and an important issue faced in Papua New Guinea, especially in Port Moresby, as there are limited recycling facilities. When it rains, the rubbish on the ground blocks up the drains, streets flood and waste is washed into the ocean.
Students enrolled at BbP’s Library Learning Centres learnt about the importance of recycling and waste management to protect their immediate environment and got busy cleaning up, recycling and planting.
Gloves got strapped on and bags were ready for the clean-up around the libraries. Thanks to a lovely donation of thousands of seed sticks from Trukai - collected milk containers, coca cola bottles and Trukai rice bags got turned into pots of basil, thyme, parsley, coriander, mint and sage herbs for the children to enjoy in the coming weeks.
In addition to this, parents of the children also stepped up to the task and provided the students with pots and plants, which were planted and cared for on the grounds of the libraries.
BbP would like to thank Trukai for the donation of seeds and for coming along to help the children with their planting and caring for the environment.
