International Teachers DayBuk bilong Pikinini celebrates 15th Anniversary

Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) will today celebrate International Teacher’s Day in all its Library Learning Centres across Papua New Guinea. The children and teachers will be enjoying a nice cake to mark the day but also to celebrate that BbP is turning 15 this year.

BbP has since 2007 been establishing Library Learning Centres, which feature a comprehensive Early Childhood Education program developed in-house by the organisation.  The program includes teaching in literacy – with a very strong focus on phonics – numeracy, cultural knowledge, digital learning via tablets, health, virtues and discipline – all required to gain solid foundations before starting school.

BbP’s 70 teachers receive both annual refresher training and in-library training to ensure the program can be delivered to the 5-year-old children enroll to the highest possible standard. This training is also available for elementary and primary school teachers and includes training and upskilling in phonics, lesson planning, classroom management, positive behavior strategies and sign-language for inclusive education. BbP also supports schools and teachers with the provision of school library kits, classroom books and teaching resources to ensure the teachers have the tools they need to ensure the children can perform at high levels and reach their full potential.

Leanne Resson, BbP Executive Officer said:Happy International Teacher’s Day to all. We highly value our teachers and believe that the value of a good education cannot be underestimated. It all starts with support for the teachers”

Anne-Sophie Hermann, BbP Founder and Chairperson said: “On this International Teacher’s Day I would like to sincerely thank all BbP past and present teachers for the amazing work they do to every day to provide children, often in remote and isolated locations, with an opportunity to become literate and take control of their lives. If you can learn to read you can learn anything.”

BbP will be celebrating its 15th anniversary milestone with partners and guests with a big event at APEC Haus on the 12th of November. The event will highlight and thank those organisations, which have enabled BbP to reach thousands of children with its Early Childhood Education program and hundreds of schools with the donation of school library kits and classroom readers. BbP is looking forward to the next 15 years, with an opportunity to reach even more children across Papua New Guinea.

The event will be celebrated with a fun “Back to School” themed party, which include dinner, an impact documentary, a lolly shop, an Ilimo Ice cream cart, drinks, live music, DJ and dancing. An event not to be missed!
