Oral hygiene education is vital in early childhood

Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) has marked World Tooth brushing Day with an oral health awareness day at all Library Learning Centres.

Learning how to brush teeth and understand the importance of oral health for overall well-being from a young age, will assist children with adopting healthy habits, which will hopefully last a life-time.

Thanks to a donation of oral health kits and educational posters, which are part of Colgate’s ‘Bright smiles, Bright Futures’ program, BbP children have had a fun day of learning. According to Colgate’s program: “Oral health includes not only bright smiles, but it also long-term oral health and well-being. Tooth decay, if left untreated, can cause pain and discomfort, undermine self-esteem, quality of life and result in a poorer school attendance.”

BbP children all brought water with them to class, got a demonstration of how to brush their teeth and enjoyed a fun session of simultaneous tooth brushing, which resulted in some very bright smiles indeed.

November 1st, serves as a reminder of the importance of proper dental hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing, to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Having fun and brushing teeth twice a day is the way to go.

BbP is grateful to Colgate for the support with kits for the children and posters for the libraries. Heath and education do indeed go hand in hand.
