Community Educator training

Small communities are very often struggling to support all children to get an education. Thanks to financial support from the Swiss Embassy in Canberra we have just finished training community educators for the upcoming Berere community learning centre.

Berere is located about an hour’s drive from the capital of Port Moresby but there are no services such as electricity, running water and people still live very traditionally. With a personal commitment from local land owner Brenda Hemetsberger and her husband Andrew to set up the learning centre, we were able to secure funding for the training, books and resources, which was also extended to include teachers from 4 surrounding schools.

The community educators and teachers were hugely grateful for the opportunity to attend the training and up skill - which is something of a rare occurrence in small village settings. They also thanked BbP for the great teaching strategies, phonics lessons, inclusive education training, books and teaching resources which has now given them a great motivation boost for their daily teaching. We will look forward to seeing the centre up and running and more than 50 children getting the right start to their education.

A great thank you to the Swiss Embassy in Canberra for the financial support for the training, books and teaching materials. Thank you to Brenda and Andrew Hemetsberger for providing land for the community learning centre and for organising the teachers from surrounding schools to take part in the training.
